Application 2

Obama recently delivered a speech about the supreme courts decision on marriage equality. After

listening to the speech there are a few of Larsen's cultural images and myths that can be applied. The one that I noticed first is the possibility of success. This is shown when Obama talks about how this is a victory for many different people. Obama says that this is a victory for gay and lesbian couples, victory for allies and friends, and a victory for America. The speech give a sense of America heading in the right direction with this decision. This goes along with Larsen's possibility for success because, Obama is saying that this is a step in the right direction for America.

The second Myth that I noticed was the value of challenge. This is shown when obama talks about how much of a challenge and what kind of change this will lead to in America. Everyone knows that this has been in debate for many years. There have been great challenges in the gay and lesbian community to try and pass this in the United States. There have definitely been challenges on both sides of the argument. In the end 'love wins' and the supreme court made same sex marriage legal. So through all of the odds and challenges the gay community persisted and came out on top.

There are a few different process premises that can be used in this speech. Emotions would be a big one for many different people. If you are for marriage equality in the U.S. then you feel a sense of joy/happiness. You may have more of a feeling of belonging to and safety now that this has been passed. On the opposite end if you are against the supreme courts decision then you may feel fear or guilt depending on things you have said or done in the past. One might even feel anger about the decision if you truly feel that strongly about the topic. I would say these go along with a the sources of consonance with the reassurance of security. This can also go both ways depending on which side of the topic you are on. You may feel more secure or less secure within this country.

  1. You nailed it on this one. I found it interesting that the ideas and standards of the nation are all lumped together in this address like America as a whole shared in this victory. I especially agree about the process premise that you described. The emotional state of the nation right now would be really awesome to poll and see what people are saying as opposed to the president and supreme courts. I am not sure they would see eye to eye on this matter. But my view is, who cares! Let them get married.

  2. I had hard time watching Obama give the speech. i agree with kyle that your process premiss is solid. i think there will continue to be new challenges to come from this topic sense the supreme court desion was past. good points

  3. I think that you make good points and that you chose a good speech for this application. This is not an issue that is going to go away soon just because of the Supreme Court ruling. It is still a very highly charged topic on both sides of the issue. There needs to be more communication and common sense interjected into the debates instead of so much emotion and attitude. Understanding and compromise are hard to come by when issues are ruled by such things.

  5. You did a great job with your analysis of this speech. I won't lie, this video was really frustrating to watch just because of my own personal views. But I agree with Bart that debates like this cannot be ruled by emotion and attitude, otherwise there's more division created then unity. I think you made really good points in your analysis, well done.

  6. Great choice on speech, I haven’t gotten the chance to read into his response on marriage equality so thanks for deciding to post this. I think this speech is a great example to use for this assignment being that he is a great public speaker (in my opinion) and that you can clearly point his motives addressing the public. Great pick!

  7. Good video and nice analysis! I too agree that the second myth was likely the value of challenge. As, President Obama talking about the challenges overcome and changes coming to America because of it seems to be the consequence and benefit of such.
