Assessment 2

1. The proofs that frank shows while giving his speech to defend charlie starting with the pathos. Frank starts his speech by saying that 'it is such a crock of shit'. Frank goes on to tell everyone that Charlie is not a snitch. This is the first hit of pathos or how we feel about franks speech because we all have that inner disgust with a rat or snitch. Frank goes on to tell the court that they have the wrong boy and charlie isn't going to snitch on the kids who really did the deed. Frank says that charlie is here facing the fire while George is hiding in big daddies pocket. Again this hits the way we feel about the speech because we now know that Charlie is refusing to be a snitch so we like him. And now we find out that George who is really to blame is hiding behind his fathers money. Many people will feel another feeling of disgust here with George and empathize with Charlie because of this.

2. The biggest that I noticed that Frank brought up was the Testimony. Frank says that he has had a chance to choose right or wrong. He says that there is nothing like the site of an amputated spirit. He has seen young men with arms ripped off in war. But seeing a young man with no spirit is worse. Also Frank tells us that he has had the chance to choose the right or wrong. He chose wrong but he saw Charlie choose the right path. He testifies to charlie's good nature and how he has seen him choose the right. This also leads into Frank's Anecdotal he gives a short narrative example to show what he is talking about. We see this when he explains how he has seen war but the detached spirit i worse. Also he tells a short story about how Frank chose the wrong path while Charlie chose the right.

3. The possibility of success is shown when Frank brings up that the people of the school are thinking that they are dismissing this young boy charlie. But Frank says that they are executing his soul. This act at the school of charlie being blamed for someone else's wrongs is going to ruin his possibility for success for the rest of his life. All because Charlie refuses to be a snitch.

4. Charlie could be seen as the Triumphant individual because since he is such a good guy no matter what happens at the school Frank has faith he will pick himself up and be successful. Frank knows that unlike George and the other boys Charlie will find his way through life. The obvious one is the Rot at The Top because of the people running the school. Frank speaks to this when he says I don't care who used to go to this school there soul is dead. The people that are running the school now are corrupt and mistreating the student at the school who don't have money.

5. Frank shows logic when he explains that Charlie is being prosecuted because he isn't a snitch and because he doesn't have money. Frank shows specific evidence without giving the other persons name away of just why and how Charlie is being wrongly blamed for a crime.

6. a) The way frank as a slight slur to his words with his accent is a great way to change the way he expresses his meaning of the words he is saying. The part where the guy asks if Frank is done talking and Frank responds with 'I'm just getting started'. The way he says this is aggressive and to the point.
   b) The part where Frank stands up and gets more aggressive by saying that you are out of order. Frank jumps up and raises his voices announcing the the court guy is out of order.
   c) Then Frank goes on to say that he would basically kick the guys ass if he wasn't so old. Also Frank gets really aggressive when he says that he is 'to fucking blind'. This is when Frank really starts to get aggressive and yell at the court.
The way frank says all of these things with his draw and accent really makes in more believable and makes you agree with him.

Outline

Being a Daymaker in life

Purpose: To urge people to become “Daymakers”

Thesis: Why we should all strive to become Daymakers.

A story by a man named David Wagner who created the term “Daymaker”

Introduction: Start with a story about a woman who wanted to commit suicide and decided not to because the woman cutting her hair made her day just by talking to her.

  1. how many people do we as students walk by on a daily basis. You never know what other people are going through.
  2. The Anxiety and Depression Association of America found that 40 million Americans suffer from depression. 75 percent say that they experienced it at age 22. 34 Percent say they experienced it within the past 3 months.
  3. What it means to be a daymaker, why people should challenge themselves, what it could mean for people as a whole.

  1. Being a Daymaker can be as simple as saying hello to a passing person to introducing yourself to a person on campus whom you have never met. The little things in life are what make us as humans feel that love and warmth the feeling that we matter in this world.

  1. Why should we strive to become Daymakers? We have all had that moment where your walking to your next class its just you and another person on the sidwalk and at the last second you look at your shoes or your phone. That doesn’t feel good. The pass/fail game.

  1. Everyday you turn on your TV or onto social media its something negetive. We have an opportunity to be that positive influence in another humans life. Don’t sit by and let your life pass you buy while you sit in your nut shell refusing to branch out.

How becoming a Daymaker will change your life and the peoples lives around you. You never know what other

Arnold Schwarzenegger's 6 rules to success...

When thinking about someone who is a Triumphant Individual I couldn't help but think of the Arnold. This man from Austria came from a family of nothing. His mother and father were very poor and he came from nothing. He moved to the United States and won the Mr. Universe at 20 years old. After he went on to win the biggest bodybuilding title of the Olympia a total of 7 times. When he retired from bodybuilding he became of the the highest payed actors the world has ever seen. All because of his funny accent that everyone told him was stupid. He then married into our countries most powerful families the Kennedy family for a short time. Became to governor of California and continues to be an inspiration for people all over the world. This is the meaning of the Triumphant individual. In the video Arnold lays out six rules to live by when trying to make your way to the top.

The video also plays on many people emotions I believe because, we all have those moments in our life's that maybe we wish we had taken advantage of. The reason so many people look up to someone like Arnold is because so many of us don't trust ourselves enough to take a shot on ourselves. We look up to people like this because they took the risk on themselves and it worked out. Deep down we all wish we had it in us to take that shot.

Application 2

Obama recently delivered a speech about the supreme courts decision on marriage equality. After

listening to the speech there are a few of Larsen's cultural images and myths that can be applied. The one that I noticed first is the possibility of success. This is shown when Obama talks about how this is a victory for many different people. Obama says that this is a victory for gay and lesbian couples, victory for allies and friends, and a victory for America. The speech give a sense of America heading in the right direction with this decision. This goes along with Larsen's possibility for success because, Obama is saying that this is a step in the right direction for America.

The second Myth that I noticed was the value of challenge. This is shown when obama talks about how much of a challenge and what kind of change this will lead to in America. Everyone knows that this has been in debate for many years. There have been great challenges in the gay and lesbian community to try and pass this in the United States. There have definitely been challenges on both sides of the argument. In the end 'love wins' and the supreme court made same sex marriage legal. So through all of the odds and challenges the gay community persisted and came out on top.

There are a few different process premises that can be used in this speech. Emotions would be a big one for many different people. If you are for marriage equality in the U.S. then you feel a sense of joy/happiness. You may have more of a feeling of belonging to and safety now that this has been passed. On the opposite end if you are against the supreme courts decision then you may feel fear or guilt depending on things you have said or done in the past. One might even feel anger about the decision if you truly feel that strongly about the topic. I would say these go along with a the sources of consonance with the reassurance of security. This can also go both ways depending on which side of the topic you are on. You may feel more secure or less secure within this country.

"God Made a Farmer"

1. The ethics of the commercial are mostly related to religion and being a farmer and if you are both of those things or, simply related to either one of those two things you must buy a Ram truck. This pulls what i would believe to be almost every American because in one way or another every person is somehow tied to a farmer. Wether you know a farmer or if you just buy produce from a market you somehow are tied to the farming industry even still today. The narrator helps go along with these ethics of "American Virtues" because of who he is. Now even if you don't know who Paul Harvey is you can still relate to his voice. His deep rusty voice along side all of the pictures shown in the video paint a picture in your mind that goes beyond just watching the video. He simply sounds what people would think a farmer might sound like.

2. The central route being that of religion and being American. Throughout the Ad the words 'so God made a farmer' are repeated countless times. This is trying to make a direct route with many people of religion that is widely shared throughout the United States. Along with the words of God being repeated there are pictures being played of a man praying, a family praying, and other depictions of family and togetherness. This is all something that the 99% can relate with directly. The Ad also tries to drop little things in along the way a more peripheral route to get the people to buy in. Showing pictures of mixed families, a black farmer, a young female farmer, an old female farmer. All things that your typical 'American Farmer' probably doesn't look like if you went out on the street and asked people what farmer joe looks like. This is the genius of this ad, they are playing into that 1% that is left going saying 'huh' 'why did god make a farmer'? This gives people a chance to say yeah I can work hard to even though I am different. You don't have to be an old white man to be a farmer and help out your neighbors and help out America.

3. Pathos- Makes me feel like I don't do enough. Like I should be working harder and bitching about how hard my life is when there is someone out there putting in their 40 hours by tuesday noon and put in another 72 hours by pain of tractor back. Makes you want to go out and buy a Ram and get to work.
Logos- The idea of working hard and how good a long hard day can be for someone. How the American farmer has shaped the United States. There is logic behind God making a farmer because farmers have done so much for the country.
Ethos- Im sure if a person was to know Paul Harvey the Ad would have much more credibility to the message than someone who doesn't. Without knowing its still credible because you can see all of the photos being played throughout the film. You can see just how hard they are working.
4. Most people know what a farmer is before seeing this Ad. So most people have their own knowledge of what a farmer may do on a daily basis. There are some things throughout the ad that people may not realize or even understand. Like shoe a horse with a hunk of car tire. Things throughout the ad that people may or may not relate to because the understand the meaning.
5. The narrator paints a picture in your head about what a farmer does and doesn't do. In the beginning he shows just how tough a farmer is, working long hours, and doing hard physical labor. Later in the ad the narrator switches to how soft a farmer must be a times by saying he would stop his tractor just to splint the leg of a meadow lark. Showing pictures of family and praying to God. The narrator does a great job of wanting us to believe whatever it is he says a farmer does. So by the end you have this idea in your head of the American farmer and how you want to be one so you should get a Ram.
6. For me when I picture a farmer I think of The Triumphant Individual. This person pulls themselves up from their bootstraps and puts in hard work. This is exactly what a the ad says a farmer does. Everything about the triumphant individual is what a farmer is. Im sure there have been doubters of the farmers around the U.S. but the farmers wake up every morning and milk cows and work all day and then milk cows again because they are self driven.
7. Moral appeal because of all the talk about God throughout the ad. Many people can relate to the idea or belief in God regardless of your religion. So the ad plays onto peoples morals. Positive self feeling. After the ad you get this feeling like I wish I was a farmer because, then you would be all of those things in the video AND.... you would drive a Ram. Positive Altercasting the ad states all these good things that farmers do and they do all these good things because God made them to be here to do these good things so they get a Ram. Reward because in the end the ad is all about Ram trucks. The ad is saying that God made a farmer and if you work hard and do all these things than you deserve a ram. And if you weren't born a farmer well you probably work hard anyways and have a sense of self entitlement so you deserve a Ram anyways.
8. The first process premise is needs. The idea of needs is throughout the ad from emotional security. The ad is saying that God made a farmer to to all of these things for people that a regular person never does in their daily lives but, its okay that you don't do these things because God made a farmer special. So you don't need to feel bad about not working extra hard because you aren't a farmer. Also there is a sense of power because the ad says that God made a farmer. So the almighty god so powerful looked down and said I need a caretaker. So God made a farmer thats powerful. The last of the needs is the sense of roots. The images through the ad show farmers being deep in the community by going to a meeting until midnight at the school. Also, many pictures are shown of the farmers being around and with family.
Emotions- Guilt that God didn't make you a farmer is something that I felt. Guilt that you work nowhere near as hard as a farmer does but you complain all the time about how hard you life is. Anger that you have wined about your life and you now know just how hard the farmer has it. Pride that you are from a country that has farmers. Where God looked down and said I need a caretaker and these caretakers are still here for us. Happiness and joy that we have farmers to put in all this hard work and get the crops to the masses of people for their everyday lives.
Attitudes- Much like we talked about before there are influences throughout the ad that pull on your emotions. This ad can go as far as to change your attitude on your everyday life. If it changes something small like when you go to buy produce and you think about where it came from. Or something big like you changing the way your attitude is at work because of seeing just how hard the farmer works.
Consistency- reassurance of security knowing that the farmer of the 'caretaker' of the world is out there looking out for you and I.
9. I would say that the one of Packards compelling needs that I found the most is the sense of roots. This comes from the way the entire ad depicts this idea of being a hard working American. I believe that in some way or another every person out there can relate to this ad. The ad gives you a sense of roots not just into the farming community or being rooted to God but to America. There is a bigger picture of all of us being related to this sense of God making a farmer.
10. The attitudes in the ad pull onto people religion and idea of hardworking American. The first image that is shown on the ad after the cow is a photo of an old church as you hear Paul Harvey 'on the eight day' both the photo along with Paul voice sets the tone for the ad to be religion based. Several more times you see pictures of a man praying in a church and a family praying around the table. These photos along with Paul's voice can pull on peoples emotions. If you are a hard working American or believe in God you must be driving a Ram because, at the end the caption reads 'for the farmer in all of us'.

Post 1

It seems that in todays day everything is done on the go. This is the same for todays gaming. People are playing more and more on handheld devices while hectically getting from A to B in their daily lives. The mobile game "Game of War" is one of the popular games that has recently come out. One of the Ads for the game portrays Kate Upton as some sort of Queen leading an army shown here.

Using a woman like Kate Upton in the ad someone who is known by society as a "sex symbol" gives many people a motivation to play the game. The ad starts with her scandalously sitting in a bath getting pampered by two other woman. Its obvious that the target audience is 16-40+ year old males, not to say that woman cant play the game because they can. The motivation is to "rule an empire" like she says in the begining of the ad. This plays on many mens "manly" emotion and that feeling rises where you feel more important that you really are. As though you might actually rule an empire.

The abilities are money, time, power, and possibly sexuality. The game is free for anyone to play making it much more accessible for people. Also games like these today are a time waster. When you have five minutes before a class you turn on Game of War and rule an empire for a moment to pass the time. This in turn leads to the feeling of power. The idea that you can unlock your phone fire up the app and rule an empire. Every time someone loads up the app they see Ms. Kate Upton again reminding them just how sexy and badass this game is "or so they think".

Triggers would be actually downloading the app and playing the game. At the end of the video you see Kate seductively looking in to the camera and asking if you want to come and play. Boom you are hitting that download button. The makers of the ad and game have just pulled your trigger and before you know it your downloading this ridiculous app. No offense if you play this game.

Process premise for the ad are the emotion that the ad plays on the person watching the video. Remember the target audience here. This ad plays on how simple minded men can be and plays on our very simple emotions. The emotion that you can get a woman like Kate Upton and you can lead and empire all false ideas. The attitude that you are a badass and can do anything you want just download this app. It plays a little into mens testosterone to try and be bigger and badder than the guy next to him.

Interesting to see an ad like this after being in class. Makes me think what sort of things I have been tricked into after knowing Fogg's model.
